Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG 5000 IU) is comprised of 237 amino acids arranged in a single chain with three intramolecular disulfide bridges. It is not a steroid, but rather a naturally occurring peptide hormone. Initially produced by the embryo during early pregnancy, later by the trophoblast (a part of the placenta), hCG plays a crucial role in regulating a pregnant woman's hormones, preparing the uterine lining for the implantation of the fertilized egg. With a mass of 36.7kDa, HCG functions similarly to Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in the body, as LH is categorized as a Gonadotropin.
Gonadotropins were first extracted from humans in 1958, specifically from the pituitary glands. A gonadotropin refers to any substance that stimulates the gonads, such as the ovaries or testes. Structurally, hCG is heterodimeric, with an alpha subunit identical to LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone).
LH, a gonadotropin produced in pituitary cells, comprises a beta chain of 115 amino acids and an alpha chain of 89 amino acids. In the testes, LH binds to receptors on the Leydig cells, stimulating the synthesis and secretion of testosterone. Similarly, FSH, another gonadotropin, consists of a beta chain of 115 amino acids and an alpha chain of 89 amino acids. FSH supports testicular growth and the function of Sertoli cells, essential for sustaining maturing sperm cells. TSH, or thyrotropin, secreted by cells in the anterior pituitary gland, comprises a beta chain of 112 amino acids and an alpha chain of 89 amino acids, shared with LH, FSH, and HCG. TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone) released by the hypothalamus stimulates the production of TSH. TSH prompts the thyroid gland to produce triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), regulating the body's metabolism.
